State Senator Mallory McMorrow’s Bill Banning Conversion Therapy Shows Bold, Progressive Leadership

I’ve been meaning to highlight this news for the last week.

State Senator Mallory McMorrow from Royal Oak unseated Republican incumbent Senator Marty Knollenberg in Michigan’s 13th State Senate District. And she won it by running on an aggressive, people-powered progressive agenda calling for clean water, affordable health care, and government transparency. I know, revolutionary, right?

Well, Senator McMorrow made news when she joined Ann Arbor House Democrat Yousef Rabhi to introduce legislation banning conversion therapy by health professionals.

Senate Bill 284 and House Bill 4515 would prohibit so-called “treatments” designed to “force changes to sexual orientation or gender identity in individuals under the age of 18.”

Michigan would join 16 other states that already banned the practice.

In a statement, McMorrow said:

“Eradicating conversion therapy will send a clear message that Michigan is a place where discrimination will not be tolerated. If we want to attract and retain talented, hardworking people in our communities, we need to ensure that our state is welcoming and open to all.”

Do you think the right-wing Michigan Republican legislature will take-up these bills? We can force them to acknowledge their existence, and if they don’t, then perhaps in two years we can put more real progressive leaders in the legislature to end this hateful practice.

Here’s the Senator introducing her bill on the Senate floor:

Thank you state Senator McMorrow! You’re the change we’re hoping for!
