Give Credit Where Credit Is Due

It took awhile, but finally the entire Democratic Michigan House delegation is backing the start of impeachment inquiries against the biggest disaster to reside in the White House.

But we shouldn’t forget that it was Michigan Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib who declared back in January that we had to “impeach the Motherfu_ _ _ _!”

Back then, Tlaib was called “nasty” by Trump, and some of her Democratic allies slipped into the shadows, refusing to defend her. Not all, mind you. But some did.

It’s still a wonder why it took this long for some to finally conclude that, yeah, this guy is a threat to this country’s rule of law and national security. I’m still befuddled as to why impeachment hearings didn’t open immediately after we learned that military personnel have been staying at Trump’s Turnberry resort in Scotland.

It’s obvious to the most outside observer that Trump has been using the presidency to enrich his pocketbook at the expense of taxpayers. Vox has a detailed write-up about it.

But better late than never.

Look, I was beyond thrilled when Elisa Slotkin unseated Republican Mike Bishop in the 8th District. It was a huge win for the Democratic Wave of 2018. And I understand that she’s not in the most progressive of districts. Really, I do.

I’ve been dealing some criticism towards Slotkin lately. But that doesn’t mean I don’t want her in the seat. I think she’s doing a solid job, but I just believe that we’re living in a dangerous time with a dangerous guy in the White House. This isn’t the time for careful and incremental change.

That being said, I’m thrilled Congresswoman Slotkin joined with other national security Democrats in calling for impeachment inquiries after the world learned that Trump tried to extort the Ukrainian government in exchange to dig-up dirt against a potential political rival.

In The Washington Post, Slotkin and the other national security Democrats wrote:

The president of the United States may have used his position to pressure a foreign country into investigating a political opponent, and he sought to use U.S. taxpayer dollars as leverage to do it. He allegedly sought to use the very security assistance dollars appropriated by Congress to create stability in the world, to help root out corruption and to protect our national security interests, for his own personal gain. These allegations are stunning, both in the national security threat they pose and the potential corruption they represent. We also know that on Sept. 9, the inspector general for the intelligence community notified Congress of a “credible” and “urgent” whistleblower complaint related to national security and potentially involving these allegations. Despite federal law requiring the disclosure of this complaint to Congress, the administration has blocked its release to Congress.

And let’s give a round of applause to Michigan Congresswoman Haley Stevens for joining the fight as well!

Like Congresswoman Slotkin, I was ecstatic when Haley Stevens flipped her district to blue in 2018. She’s a huge supporter of moving Michigan into the next generation of science and technology to help build a new economy. Yet, I was a little disappointed she didn’t call for impeachment inquiries sooner.

However, she is now, and that’s what counts.

And, of course, we must highlight how Michigan Congresswoman Debbie Dingell also joined her fellow Democrats as well this week.

But we can’t forget that it was Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib who pushed for impeachment from Day One. She’s a proud Detroiter who doesn’t back down from a fight. While that angers the extreme right wing Republican Party, and even some so-called moderates in her own party, Tlaib follows in the true tradition of progressivism by making opponents feel uncomfortable because the truth makes them feel uncomfortable.

In a statement today, Tlaib said:

“We have done enough investigations that have helped in uncovering many of his illegal acts and impeachable offenses. These are days, months, and years we cannot get back for the people who sent us here to be a check on this dangerous administration and push forth legislation on issues they care about. Congress must act swiftly on articles of impeachment. We are a nation of laws and no one, especially the President, is above them. Impeachment is a very serious matter, but the actions of this President and his disregard for a co-equal branch of government and the laws he should be following call for this serious response. As members of Congress, impeachment is our only answer at this point.”

We’re living in dire times in which Trump is extorting foreign governments (allegedly), reversing water and environmental protections, caging migrant children, using government to enrich his family, and passing laws that further enrich him and his friends and family!

Meanwhile, the Republican Party is AWOL. They relinquished power to Trump and the extreme evangelical movement, and we can’t rely of them to do the right thing.

It’s time to fight for principle. You can’t say Trump is a threat to this country’s well-being, but do nothing to change it.

Thanks to the leadership of Rashida Tlaib and other progressive House Democrats ( and progressive activists, too!), more and more Democrats are reading the tea leaves and have finally decided that enough is enough.
